South North Traverse of the Eastern Anti-Atlas.
9 Days, 6 Days trek, Period: Autumn to Spring, Level: Moderate

This trip in the deep south of Morocco will take us to the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas range, and the
magnificent Saghro Mountains. Surrounded by the African plaque pushing from the south, and the
imposing high Atlas barrier up north, this range offers a stunning variety of landscapes. In the heart of
the territory of the semi nomadic Ait Atta tribe, our short trek will lead us through deep wadies, lunar
plateaus and pitons forests. In a world submerged by warm lights, the breeze from the south
announces the desert close…
Day1.
Ouarzazate
Arrival to Ouarzazate Airport, where you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel in the
city. Overnight in 3* hotel on half board basis.
Day2.
Ouarzazate - Nkob - Berkik / 3h30 transfer / 3h30 trek
Departure in minibus to cross the Anti Atlas Range and the join the magnificent Draa Valley. At Tansikht, we
drive east on the southern slopes of the Djebel Saghro toward Nkob. We leave the paved road and drive south
toward the oases of Handour where we meet our muleteer team. After a picnic lunch, our trek starts. From
here the trail leads north up the fertile Hanedour Valley to Berkik. The cliff faces and ridges of the valley
are home to a wide array of birds including buzzards and hawks. This is a relatively lush area of the Saghro
and we pass a number of small plots of terraced cultivation, well irrigated by the snow-melt water that
generally flows until the end of May, first camp at Berkik.
Day3.
Berkik - Berkou / 6h00 trek
This morning we will climb the Djebel Tifdassine to overhang the amazing tabular rock formation of "Tin
Oayour". We then continue into the heart of the massif and move away from settled areas into nomad
country of the Ait Atta (which dominated Morocco south of the Atlas from the 16th to the early 20th Century)
and walk down the superb gorges of Ighissi. In the afternoon, we will follow a side path overlooking the
valley till our camp at Berkou.
Day4.
Berkou - Bab n'Ali / 6h00 trek
Today, we will climb the "Ougnat Pass" we approach one of the great landmarks of the Saghro, the Tizi
N'Taggourt - hundreds of rock spires rise from the widely eroded plateau to form a 'petrified forest' and a
truly extraordinary spectacle. After passing the great rock gates which guard the southern edge of the Tizi
N'Taggourt, the trail traverses this volcanic chaos, with panoramic views of the Saghro and northern Sahara,
to a penultimate campsite in a tiny oasis beneath the huge towers of Bab'Nali.
Day5.
Bab n'Ali - Igli / 4h30 trek
We retrace our steps back through the gates of Bab n'Ali and head north towards the pretty valley of Igli and
the amazing rock formation of "Ikhf n'Oulghoum" (the camels head), camp near Igli.
Day6.
Igli - Imi n'Ouareg / 6h00 trekking
Today we follow the canyons of "Akka Akhmassi" and climb the Mount "Kwawech" at 2660m. From the top, we
will enjoy the superb panoramic views extending to the vast Sahara south and the snow capped Atlas
Mountains up north. We cross the divide line to the northern side of the Djebel Saghro. Camp at Imi n'Ouareg.
Day7.
Imi n'Ouareg - Tagdilt - Skoura / 4h30 trek/ 2h00 transfer
Early start this morning to walk a long downhill trail that will lead us to the beginning of the high plateaus
where our trek ends. After a farewell to our team, aminibus transfer will take us to Skoura via the Dades
Valley. Overnight in a beautiful Kasbah.
Day8.
Skoura - Marrakech
We will continue our journey by road this morning to Marrakech, (also known as the 'Red City') the most
vibrant, colourful, and fascinating city in Morocco. You will have the rest of the day to explore the souks and
the medina. Overnight in a Riad on bed & breakfast basis.
Day9.
Return flight
Depend on your flight schedule a transfer is organised to Marrakech Airport for your flight back home.
